Summary: In Room 217 of the Lakes Region Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, something has awakened. Something evil. Brady Hartsfield, perpetrator of the Mercedes Massacre, where eight people were killed and many more were badly injured, has been in the clinic for five years, in a vegetative state. According to his doctors, anything approaching a complete recovery is unlikely. But behind the drool and stare, Brady is awake, and in possession of deadly new powers that allow him to wreak unimaginable havoc without ever leaving his hospital room.

*Starred Review* In Mr. Mercedes (2014), he used a car to kill his victims and tried to kill more with a bomb at a rock concert. Now, confined to his bed and thought to be a vegetable, psychopath Brady Hartsfield drives his victims to suicide via mind control in this concluding volume of King's Bill Hodges trilogy. Ex-detective Hodges has long suspected Brady's catatonia is a ruse. However, he and his partner, the brilliant but reclusive Holly Gibney, are taken by surprise by Brady's terrifying new powers, and they must work against the clock to stop him permanently. As always, King provides well-drawn characters, whether sympathetic or intrinsically evil, and Patton's portrayal reveals their natures. There's a note of desperation in Hodges's gravelly voice; he knows this is his last chance to close this case. Holly speaks in a jerky cadence that suggests her hesitancy both to speak and to interact with others. Brady, fueled by a desire to avenge the injuries inflicted on him by Hodges and Holly in Mr. Mercedes, switches from fuming and ranting, to pompously ordering his minions to do his bidding, to smoothly seducing teens to commit suicide via a handheld computer game. The result is an absolutely chilling encounter with evil. King's violent, riveting, relentlessly paced, and very satisfying finale ties up the loose ends but leaves listeners hungry for more. LJ Reviews 2016 September #2

King wraps up his Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes; Finders Keepers) as retired detective Hodges again confronts Mercedes killer Brady Hartsfield. Though Hartsfield is hospitalized in a nonresponsive vegetative state, he has been receiving doses of experimental drugs that may give him the powers of telekinesis and mind control. Hodges again teams up with Holly Gibney and Jerome Robinson to unravel mysterious suicides tentatively linked to the obsolete Zappit Commander video game system and, perhaps, to an isolated, nearly immobile Brady Hartsfield. King pushes all the horror, suspense, and supernatural buttons listeners have grown to love. The audio is given a superb reading by Will Patton, whose voice characterizations add the finishing touches to this horror-filled novel. VERDICT Highly recommended; an essential purchase for adult collections.
