Val is in no mood for a camping trip—she's having a hard time dealing with her bratty teenage daughter, Brianne, and she's working through her feelings for her estranged husband. Still, Val and her two best friends somehow end up chauffeuring Brianne and Jennifer, her soon-to-be-ex's new girlfriend, upstate to the Adirondacks. It's tense, to say the least—Val caught her husband cheating on her with Jennifer. When they arrive late to the resort, they all get stuck in the same room. The ensuing fight, ending in Brianne running away, causes the motley group to get kicked out of the hotel. They're forced to seek accommodations at a nearby campground, which would be bad enough, but it gets worse—a pair of bloodthirsty killers is on the loose. Sounds campy, and several of the characters are pretty stock (the flaming former Broadway dancer best friend, Val's cheating ex, Brianne's box-of-rocks boyfriend), but Fielding manages to keep the tension (and plenty of gore) ramped up throughout this fact-paced novel of suspense. A killers-in-the-wilderness book from Fielding, who often edges her tales of personal grief with something a little bloodier. A ragtag group of hikers comprising one woman, her two oddball friends, her teenage daughter, and her soon-to-be-ex-husband's fiancée march through the Adirondacks, finally settling near Shadow Creek. Teenaged Brianne slips away to be with her boyfriend and can't be found in the morning. Alas, a murderous duo are haunting the environs. Fielding has a fond following.

PW Reviews 2012 November #4

In this chilling tale of serial killers on the loose from bestseller Fielding (Now You See Her), Valerie Rowe and two Manhattan friends decide at the last minute to head up to the Lodge at Shadow Creek in the Adirondacks to celebrate her 40th birthday. Accompanying them are Val's 16-year-old daughter, Brianne, by her soon-to-be-divorced philanderer of a husband, Evan, and Evan's fiancée, Jennifer. Evan, whom Val still sort of loves, is unable to join them because of business in the city. Val's ill feelings toward Jennifer and her constant verbal sparring with rebellious Brianne add tension, especially after Brianne goes missing, and the odd assortment of campers move from the lodge to tents. The suspense rises as a pair of serial killers, who gleefully dispatched an elderly couple at their isolated Adirondacks cabin in the prologue, seek more victims. The intricate, twisty plot builds to an explosive climax. Agent: Tracy Fisher, WME Entertainment. (Dec.)
